Choosing your Designer: Review

With a little forethought, you can make sure you’re happy with your choice of designer and most likely enjoy a contented working relationship for some time to come.  To help pull it all together, here’s a quick review!

1. Find your mate— Know what kind of person you want to work with and realize that the relationship between you and your web designer is a primary factor in how satisfied you’ll be with the finished site. Date around if you need to!
2. Don’t kiss any old toad—The first or (eek!) the cheapest designer you find may not be royalty. If it looks like a toad, it probably is a toad.
3. See the obvious—Make sure the designer’s site and portfolio work represent the level of professionalism that you want to display to your own web visitors. If navigating the designer’s sites is a difficult, unpleasant experience, navigating your own site probably would be just as unpleasant.
4. Source secrets—Look at the code behind the page to get clues as to the tools being used and what tricks are up the designer’s sleeve.
5. Fiscal compatibility—While price is almost always a factor in choosing a designer, make sure it’s not the only factor. Your dream designer should have a fair price that’s based on your unique needs. It may be hard to pass up that $25-a-page deal, but you should expect to pay professional rates for professional services.
