And I spent a lot of my time working for my own sites and learned a lot doing it... and was getting a client here and there. Then, ended up working for a publishing company for a few years and I quickly realized my level of skills and experience when I ended up running the entire web/commerce part of the multimillion dollar business. Then, their greed crashed the company... lol. So I went back to what I was doing... and now... I'm stuck. I too have been undercharging, overworking, overfulfilling, and suffering for it. Done with that! Don't kill yourself trying to please clients. If there is not a mutually beneficial understanding, make the change... even if you think you'll lose the client. It's where I'm at right now. I learned another hard lesson... even when you work with someone for years, and basically call each other friends... its still BUSINESS FIRST. And for your own sake... READ ANY CONTRACT OVER AND OVER UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND IT ALL. Never sign all of your rights away. Good luck fellow designers and developers!

Good post

I’ve been a web designer / developer for a decade now. I am a 20+ year print design pro, moving into the web arena. I did a simple site for my sister-in-law and now word of mouth is spreading and I am caught a little by surprise on how to charge--especially since I am a beginner in this field. Your article was very helpful, as opposed to some of the non-specific nonsense I wasted my time reading.

Thank you for your advice and insite. This was exactly what I was looking for. I have to wonder though what is the best way to tell that your freelance business is ready to take on higher quality clients, when do u know you've got the skillset to deliver these products? Just wondering because I think I might be ready to transition, but I've been researching advice to make this decision. Thanks!

Thanks for this post!
