Good news: Good Karma Host is greener than it used to be. Green hosting makes more of a difference than you may realize.
Information technolgy has a significant climate impact. Between 3% – 4% of all electricity (and therefore associated carbon emissions) currently required worldwide is utilized to power data centers that run web servers–just like the data center that houses Good Karma Host.
That’s why I was so excited to hear that Hostgator, our business partner that provides our server hardware and system adminstration, has “gone green” in a big way by addressing the impact of their business on the planet.
- Investing in Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) specifically for homegrown , Texas-generated wind power! For every REC purchased, a windfarm in Texas creates a megawatt of wind power and releases it into the power grid.
- Using RECs to create enough renewable energy resources for both powering & cooling servers – at a rate of 130% required for all shared and reseller servers!
- Responsible environmental practices such as using high efficiency servers, recycling, minimizing paper, etc.
While the specific power consumption of Good Karma Host is not included in the RECs need calculation, we still contribute by by partnering with and supporting a service provider who is committed to making responsible environmental choices and other ways of giving back to the community at large. It all matters.
